The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has initiated a manhunt for game hunters in Garissa County.
Police in Daadab’s Dagahaley area are actively pursuing four men who allegedly wrestled a giraffe on Tuesday evening and killed it for game meat.
Acting on information from residents of Kumahumato village, officers from Dagahaley Police Station rushed to the scene and intercepted a vehicle loaded with the animal.
“The four-game hunters fled into nearby thickets to avoid arrest,” investigators reported.
“The abandoned vehicle was towed to the police station, and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers were informed.”
The vehicle was impounded, and the game meat preserved as evidence.
“Meanwhile, a report from NTSA records identifying the vehicle’s owner has been obtained, and necessary actions are underway,” the investigators added.
In efforts to combat poaching, Kenya has begun using advanced surveillance equipment, including drones, to track poachers and monitor wildlife.
KWS and stakeholders have implemented various mechanisms to eradicate wildlife crimes, especially poaching. These efforts include enhanced community education, interagency collaboration, and intensive intelligence-led operations.
