Major Boost for Mining Sector as EPC Contract Signed for Kerio Valley Fluorspar Plant

Sofax Fluorspar Kenya Ltd and China’s Mizztech Group have taken a major step toward reviving Kenya’s fluorspar industry with the signing of an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract for the refurbishment of the Fluorspar Processing Plant in Kerio Valley, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

The agreement builds on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on August 14, 2025, which outlined a long-term technical and investment partnership. Sofax Fluorspar Kenya Ltd operates the Kerio Valley Fluorspar Project under Concession Agreement and Mining Licence ML/2025/0216, issued in July this year.

During the signing ceremony, Sofax Fluorspar Kenya CEO John Masanda said the EPC deal marks a decisive shift from planning to implementation.

“Today marks a new chapter for the Kerio Valley Fluorspar Project. With this EPC agreement, we now move from planning to execution. Our goal is clear: to restore the plant to world-class standards, optimize production, and elevate Kenya’s position as a global supplier of Acidspar Grade Fluorspar, a critical mineral used in manufacturing the electrolyte of EV batteries. The project will impact the local community and the country at large.”

Mizztech Group CEO Charles Cheng reaffirmed the company’s commitment to deploying advanced engineering solutions tailored to global market demands.

“Our collaboration with Sofax Fluorspar Kenya is anchored on technology, efficiency, and sustainable operations. Fluorspar is a strategic industrial mineral, and this project presents a unique opportunity to deploy advanced processing technologies that will significantly improve output quality and reliability. We are honoured to contribute to Kenya’s mining renaissance.”

The EPC agreement was signed by Mr. Masanda and Director David Orgut for Sofax Fluorspar Kenya Ltd, while Mr. Cheng and Eng. Arthur Mgongo, Regional Director for Mizztech East Africa, signed on behalf of Mizztech Group. The event was hosted by Kenya Chamber of Mines Chairman Dr. Patrick Kanyoro on the sidelines of the Chamber’s 2025 Gala Dinner.

The refurbishment will involve extensive upgrades to mechanical, electrical, and processing systems to improve recovery rates and operational efficiency. Once complete, the modernized plant is expected to significantly boost Kenya’s fluorspar export capacity and enhance its competitiveness in international markets.

Dr. Kanyoro praised the partnership as a model for strategic mineral development.

“The partnership between Sofax Fluorspar Kenya and Mizztech Group demonstrates the level of strategic collaboration needed to unlock the full value of our mineral resources. By combining local commitment with international engineering expertise, this project sets a new benchmark for responsible, technology-driven mineral development. It is encouraging to see such decisive progress in the revival of the Kerio Valley fluorspar operations, which will catalyze investment, enhance sector competitiveness, and deliver meaningful economic opportunities for communities and the country at large.”

The signing marks the official transition from conceptual planning to active implementation of the Kerio Valley Fluorspar Project, positioning Sofax Fluorspar Kenya and Mizztech Group as key partners in strengthening Kenya’s mining sector and supporting national industrialization goals.
