Maraga Reaffirms 2027 Presidential Bid, Slams Ruto Regime Over Legitimacy and Police Brutality

By Jane Otieno

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has reaffirmed his intention to run for the presidency in the 2027 General Election, dismissing speculation that he has abandoned his ambitions or aligned with any political faction.

Speaking with conviction about his independent political path, Maraga launched a scathing critique of President William Ruto’s administration, accusing it of losing public legitimacy due to rampant corruption, misgovernance, and the rising cases of police brutality.

Maraga, who has been quietly holding consultative meetings across several counties since early this year, made his latest declaration amid a national uproar following the death of blogger Albert Ojwang’ in police custody and the growing momentum around the Saba Saba Day protests.

“I am in this race to redeem and transform our country from the crisis it has been plunged into by poor leadership,” Maraga stated during a recent public engagement. “Kenya is in a great crisis, and it needs an honest, just, bold, and fearless leader to help it recover.”

The former Chief Justice has been actively engaging with diverse demographics, particularly the youth, who have led a wave of anti-government protests in recent months. He affirmed that his decision to run was partly inspired by calls from the Gen Z generation, who have demanded new leadership untainted by traditional political baggage.

Maraga’s brief but symbolic presence at one of the recent protests in Nairobi further signaled his solidarity with demonstrators and reinforced his criticism of police conduct under the current regime.

His renewed commitment to the presidency injects a unique and credible voice into an increasingly crowded field of aspirants, setting him apart as a figure rooted in legal integrity and constitutionalism.
