A night of passion at an apartment in Thindigua, Kiambu County, ended in tragedy after a foreigner reportedly died while having sex, moments after taking two Viagra tablets.
Patrick, as police identified him, was found dead inside the apartment near K Mall along Kiambu Road on Sunday, leaving detectives with a string of questions about what happened in the hours before his death.
Investigators are particularly interested in the two Viagra tablets he reportedly took to enhance the sexual encounter and whether the medication, possibly combined with other drugs, contributed to his sudden death.
But the circumstances surrounding his final hours have added another twist to the mystery.
“We suspect that the man took the first viagra for the first round. When he went for the second viagra is when he died,” said a police officer at the DCI headquarters privy to the investigations.
Preliminary reports claim that Patrick had reportedly been rushed to a nearby medical facility on Saturday evening after developing complications. He received treatment and was discharged in what doctors described as fair condition, according to the housemate.
“We suspect he was a Swiss but not sure,” said the neighbour.
He returned to the apartment, where he was staying with a man identified as Mungai, who later told police that Patrick appeared to have settled down.
According to the narrative given to the investigating officers, Patrick woke up after returning home, took some porridge and went back to sleep.
Only when Mungai later checked on him did he realise something was terribly wrong. Patrick was unresponsive.
Medical personnel were called to the apartment in an attempt to save him, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
Police arrived at the premises on Sunday following reports of the death.
A neighbour offered a grim description of the scene, saying: “When the police arrived, what we found was that he had died in the line of duty.”
Detectives are now piecing together Patrick’s movements, including what happened during the sexual encounter and the medication he may have taken before and after his hospital visit.
They want to establish whether he took any additional drugs after being discharged from hospital and whether there was an underlying medical condition that could have contributed to his death.
An initial examination of the body revealed no visible injuries, with police reporting no immediate signs of physical assault.
His remains were transferred to St Teresa Hospital Mortuary, Kiambu Road, where a postmortem examination is expected to establish the cause of death.
Patrick had reportedly been living at the apartment since June, having been hosted by Mungai.
The apartment complex is not unfamiliar to health officials. Earlier this year, government medical teams descended on the same building to evacuate a suspected Ebola patient, triggering concern among residents.
There is, however, no indication that the earlier health incident has any connection to Patrick’s death.
