Pwani Students Join Safaricom, Sprite ‘Hook’d on Fresh’ Digital Skills Masterclass

Pwani University students have been trained on how to transform social media activity into income-generating opportunities following a “Hook’d on Fresh” masterclass hosted by Safaricom in partnership with Sprite.

The session, which attracted more than 500 students, focused on practical ways young people can build digital brands, grow online audiences, and monetize content through various social media platforms.

Industry experts guided students through real-life examples of successful content creators, highlighting strategies such as consistency, niche selection, storytelling, and audience engagement as key drivers of online success.

Students said the training shifted their understanding of social media from leisure use to a potential career path.

“I now understand that content creation can be a source of income,” said Alfred Fondo, a Computer Science student at Pwani University. “This has encouraged me to be more intentional with my content.”

He added that reliable internet access would play a key role in enabling students to fully participate in the digital economy.

The masterclass also included a financial literacy segment, where students were encouraged to save and invest earnings from digital platforms to build long-term financial stability.

Speakers including Tileh Pacbro, Rono, Juma Shibe, and Vallery shared practical insights on growing influence online and turning creativity into sustainable income.

Safaricom’s Wealth Management representative Phelister Wanjiru introduced the Ziidi Money Market Fund, encouraging students to adopt disciplined financial habits alongside their digital ventures.

Organizers said the initiative is designed to equip young people with both technical and financial skills needed to succeed in the fast-growing creator economy.

The programme continues to be rolled out across universities in Kenya as part of efforts to empower students to participate meaningfully in the digital space.
