Liberty Kenya has officially joined the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative, marking a major milestone in the company’s commitment to responsible and ethical business practices.

The development was formalised during a certificate handover ceremony held at the Liberty Kenya Head Office, signalling the firm’s pledge to align its strategies and operations with the UN Global Compact’s Ten Principles covering human rights, labour standards, environmental stewardship and anti-corruption.

By becoming a participant, Liberty Kenya commits to embedding these universally accepted principles into its business culture, governance structures and decision-making processes, while advancing transparency and accountability through regular reporting and stakeholder engagement.

Speaking during the ceremony, Liberty Kenya Group Chief Executive Officer Kieran Godden said the move reflects a strategic shift in how the company approaches sustainability.

“At Liberty, our purpose is to make our customers’ financial freedom possible, but we recognise that true freedom is anchored in a sustainable and ethical society,” he said. “Joining the United Nations Global Compact represents a deliberate pivot from viewing corporate responsibility as simply ‘giving back’ to a more robust approach focused on ‘acting right’ across every level of our business.”

As part of this commitment, Liberty Kenya will anchor its sustainability agenda on four key pillars aimed at embedding responsible practices at the core of its operations.

These include strengthening governance frameworks to ensure integrity across all activities, adopting rigorous reporting standards to transparently measure non-financial impact, fostering industry partnerships to address systemic challenges, and investing in capacity building to equip staff and agents to champion ethical business conduct.

Global Compact Network Kenya, the local network of the United Nations Global Compact and host of the Secretariat of the Code of Ethics for Business in Kenya, welcomed Liberty Kenya’s participation.

“Liberty’s decision to join the United Nations Global Compact demonstrates a clear understanding of the role financial services institutions play in shaping resilient, inclusive and trusted economies,” said Judy Njino, Executive Director of Global Compact Network Kenya. “By committing to the Ten Principles, Liberty is reinforcing the link between strong governance, ethical conduct and long-term business performance. We look forward to working closely with Liberty to strengthen transparency, build capacity and advance collective action for responsible business in Kenya and the region.”

As a participant of the United Nations Global Compact, Liberty Kenya will submit an annual Communication on Progress, a public disclosure outlining the company’s efforts to implement the Ten Principles and contribute to broader societal goals. The commitment places Liberty among a growing number of Kenyan companies championing trust, accountability and long-term value creation through responsible business leadership.
