Kenya Railways Under Scrutiny as EACC Uncovers Sh2.2B Land Loss

Kenya Railways Corporation is among the top government Corporative under the radar of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over irregular disposal and acquisition of public land.

The annual financial report released by the Anti-graft Authority yesterday indicates that the Philip Mainga Led Corporation lost Sh2.2 Billion s in respect of illegally acquired and unexplained assets estimated at KES 22.9 billion total traced in various corruption and economic crimes in the country.

“Irregular acquisition and disposal of public land LR No. 12107 by the Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) totaling Sh2,200,000,000,” the report by EACC indicated.

This is even as an inquiry was opened over the reporting period on KRC staff taking bribes of Upto Sh400K to allow private individuals to construct a storey building on its land located in Taita Taveta against the law.

“Inquiry into allegations of bribery against Stanley Omondi Owuor who demanded a Sh400,000 bribe to allow a private individual to irregularly construct a storey building on Kenya Railways land located in Taveta township.” The report added.

In the period reported, Sh325 million worth of property for the Kenya Railways Corporations in Kisumu were recovered as Sh408 million was recovered from the State department of housing and Urban development in Mombasa and ministry of lands property were also recovered.

In its 2024/25 financial year annual report, EACC has indicated that fraudulent acquisition and disposal of public property has been on the rise during the period on the report as bribery remained the most reported offense at 37 per cent followed by embezzlement of public funds at 19 per cent, unethical conduct at 13 per cent and other economic crimes including procurement fraud, abuse of office, conflict of interest and money laundering at 21 per cent.

During the reporting period, 838 cases were under investigation for corruption, economic crimes, bribery and unethical conduct as 756 warrants were granted by the courts to conduct various searches.
