Passengers will complain, but we are also trying to survive.”

At the Railways bus station, conductors warned commuters to expect higher fares as early as next week.

“When diesel goes up by that amount, the pressure comes directly to transport operators,” said Kevin Otieno, a conductor. “Vehicle owners still expect their daily targets, yet business is already poor.”

For ordinary workers, the latest increase has revived painful memories of previous waves of high living costs that triggered public anger and anti-government protests.

“I already spend most of my salary on rent and transport,” said Mary Wanjiku, a receptionist in Nairobi. “Every time fuel goes up, food prices also rise. This government keeps saying the economy is improving, but life is becoming harder.”

Traders also warned that the impact would quickly spread to household essentials.

Jane Atieno, a vegetable trader in Gikomba market, said transporters had already informed suppliers that delivery costs would rise.

“When transport becomes expensive, everything in the market changes,” she said. “Tomatoes, onions, vegetables — all prices will go up. Customers think traders are exploiting them, but we are suffering too.”

Boda boda operators said the increase could further reduce customers as many Kenyans cut spending to survive.

“People are already bargaining for every trip,” said Samuel Kiptoo, a boda boda rider in Kasarani. “If we increase charges, some customers will stop using boda bodas completely.”

The latest fuel hike now threatens to complicate President Ruto’s re-election strategy as political temperatures slowly begin rising ahead of the 2027 polls.

Ruto came to power in 2022 on promises of a “bottom-up” economic model aimed at empowering ordinary Kenyans and easing financial pressure on low-income households. However, rising taxes, expensive electricity, costly fuel and unemployment have increasingly become rallying points for critics and opposition leaders.

Political analysts warn that cost-of-living pressures could become one of the defining political issues in the next election cycle.

“The economy is always political because citizens feel it directly,” said political analyst Justus Otieno. “When transport, food and rent become unbearable, voters begin connecting their suffering to leadership.”

Economist Ken Gichinga said the diesel increase was particularly dangerous because of how quickly it affects prices across sectors.

“Diesel powers transportation and production. Once it rises sharply, businesses pass the cost to consumers almost immediately,” he said.

The increase is also likely to strengthen opposition criticism against the Kenya Kwanza administration, with rivals expected to use the growing economic frustration to weaken support for Ruto before 2027.

Already, social media platforms were flooded with angry reactions from Kenyans questioning how families earning fixed salaries would survive another round of rising prices.

Some accused the government of overtaxing citizens while failing to cushion households from economic hardship.

At a petrol station along Thika Road, motorists expressed disbelief at the new pump prices.

“Filling a tank is becoming impossible,” said businessman John Kamau. “The government talks about economic recovery, but ordinary wananchi are not feeling it.”

The government defended the latest increase, blaming rising international petroleum prices and higher import costs. Authorities also said part of the Petroleum Development Levy Fund would be used to cushion consumers from even higher prices.

But the explanation may do little to calm growing public frustration.

Historically, fuel prices have carried heavy political consequences in Kenya because they directly affect transport, food and household expenses — issues that touch millions of voters daily.

With the 2027 election slowly taking shape, the latest increase may further intensify scrutiny on the government’s handling of the economy.

As fuel stations adjusted their pumps Friday morning and matatu operators prepared for fare hikes, many Kenyans were left confronting a painful reality: the cost of survival is rising once again — and the political pressure on President Ruto may be rising with it.

A sharp increase in fuel prices announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority has handed President William Ruto a…

[32,31,107

post-5999","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business","category-politics","category-transport-and-logistics
["GET
