{"id":4327,"date":"2025-11-19T10:28:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T10:28:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thenewsroomhub.co.ke\/?p=4327"},"modified":"2025-11-19T10:40:51","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T10:40:51","slug":"equity-bank-pushes-for-stronger-support-to-women-entrepreneurs-in-the-coast-region","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thenewsroomhub.co.ke\/index.php\/2025\/11\/19\/equity-bank-pushes-for-stronger-support-to-women-entrepreneurs-in-the-coast-region\/","title":{"rendered":"Equity Bank Pushes for Stronger Support to Women Entrepreneurs in the Coast Region"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>Women\u2019s economic empowerment took centre stage over the weekend as leaders, financial institutions and industry players convened in Mombasa to discuss the region\u2019s economic challenges, from the fragile blue economy to pressures facing the tea sector.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>At the Nyali Golf &amp; Country Club, Equity Bank Kenya hosted a stakeholder engagement that brought together county officials, business leaders and the sporting community.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The event, held alongside a golf tournament, focused on unlocking opportunities for women-led enterprises, strengthening coastal value chains and reviving the blue economy.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Mombasa Deputy Governor Francis Thoya said women must be placed at the heart of the region\u2019s development agenda.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>He noted that logistics bottlenecks, limited financing and underdeveloped value chains continue to hinder women entrepreneurs at the Coast.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cWe discussed the future of Mombasa, including logistics, the Special Economic Zone and the blue economy,\u201d Thoya said.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cWe need financial institutions that understand these opportunities and are ready to support the fishing sector, value chains and women-led enterprises.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>He commended Equity for its proactive engagement, saying the County Government looked forward to deeper collaboration.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Equity Bank Kenya Managing Director Moses Nyabanda said the Bank\u2019s coastal engagements aimed at gathering real-time feedback to strengthen financial inclusion.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>He reaffirmed Equity\u2019s commitment to supporting communities through credit, insurance, training and digital banking.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cThis evening is about connection and understanding how we can serve you better,\u201d Nyabanda said.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cYour dreams are the engine, and our role is to finance and protect them.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/biznakenya.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Equity-Bank-Eastleigh-Branch.jpg\" alt=\"Equity to auction Nairobi businessman's vehicles over Sh302m debt\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Equity Bank\u2019s Head of Women and Youth Banking, Dr. Silpah Owich, called for more women to join the Bank\u2019s empowerment programs, which she said have already reached more than six million women countrywide.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cWe provide unsecured loans, tailored accounts and business training to help women thrive,\u201d she said.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cWomen supporting women is how we rise, and after today\u2019s discussions, I expect to welcome many more into the program.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Nyali Golf Club Captain Omar Lewa thanked Equity for backing the tournament and investing in local development. The event closed with an awards ceremony honouring golfers, including overall winner Romit.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Separately, Nyabanda held talks with the East African Tea Trade Association (EATTA) in Mombasa as the tea sector continues to grapple with global oversupply, price volatility and shifting regulatory demands.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>EATTA Managing Director George Omuga said factories, brokers and exporters are operating under pressure following three years of market disruptions.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cThe market shocks have been real,\u201d Omuga said. \u201cFrom supply\u2013demand mismatch to policy shifts and depressed global prices, our farmers and factories are carrying a heavy burden.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Nyabanda assured the Association of Equity\u2019s commitment to strengthening liquidity and financing options across the value chain.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cTea is still a lifeline of this economy,\u201d he said. \u201cIf the sector hurts, households hurt.
