{"id":3267,"date":"2024-12-11T11:01:56","date_gmt":"2024-12-11T11:01:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thenewsroomhub.co.ke\/?p=3267"},"modified":"2024-12-11T11:01:56","modified_gmt":"2024-12-11T11:01:56","slug":"ruto-wants-kenyan-content-creators-to-pay-taxes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thenewsroomhub.co.ke\/index.php\/2024\/12\/11\/ruto-wants-kenyan-content-creators-to-pay-taxes\/","title":{"rendered":"Ruto wants Kenyan content creators to pay taxes"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-v-8296f554=\"\">\n<div data-v-8296f554=\"\">President William Ruto has revealed plans to tax content creators benefitting from the monetisation scheme he negotiated in April 2024.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-8296f554=\"\">\n<div data-v-8296f554=\"\">\n<p>Speaking during the celebration of Kenya Private Sector Alliance\u2019s 20th Anniversary in Nairobi, the president explained that the deal enabled Kenyan content creators to commercialise content and now earn millions in the digital space.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-8296f554=\"\">\n<div data-v-8296f554=\"\">\n<p>Ruto pointed out that it would only be fair for the State to tax such content creators to enable an equal environment for all taxpayers.<\/p>\n<div data-v-8296f554=\"\">\n<div data-v-8296f554=\"\">\n<p>&#8220;I negotiated with TikTok and Facebook, making Kenya one of only four countries where creators can monetize their accounts,&#8221; he remarked.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-8296f554=\"\">\n<div data-v-8296f554=\"\">\n<p>&#8220;Some creators now earn up to Ksh.1 million. Someone earning Ksh.20,000 or Ksh.30,000 pays tax, if you earn Ksh.1 million, isn&#8217;t it correct to contribute something to the tax kitty especially when we&#8217;ve enabled you to achieve that? I think that makes sense, at least to me,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-8296f554=\"\">\n<div data-v-8296f554=\"\">\n<p>The State has already initiated plans to tax the digital space through the Tax Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 which is expected to include digital operators into the tax bracket.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-8296f554=\"\">\n<div data-v-8296f554=\"\">\n<p>Following public participation, the bill is set to undergo a Second Reading in Parliament.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-8296f554=\"\">\n<div data-v-8296f554=\"\">\n<p>In April, Ruto said the government had signed an agreement with Google, META, and TikTok to monetise content produced by Kenyan content creators.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-8296f554=\"\">\n<div data-v-8296f554=\"\">\n<p>&#8220;Our highly talented youth are capable of creative excellence in such diverse fields as music, theatre and drama, graphic design and digital animation, fashion and craft, as well as new and emerging fields like virtual and augmented reality,&#8221; Ruto said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-8296f554=\"\">\n<div data-v-8296f554=\"\">\n<p>Ruto&#8217;s remarks of Kenya being one of four countries monetising creators&#8217; content\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.digital\/news\/president-ruto-said-kenya-is-among-only-four-african-countries-monetizing-youtube-content-but-is-that-true-n326038\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contradicts Google monetisation policies,\u00a0<\/a>stating that 12 African countries are on\u00a0YouTube&#8217;s monetised markets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-v-8296f554=\"\">\n<div data-v-8296f554=\"\">\n<p>These include Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa,\u00a0 Tunisia, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Egypt.
